THE TELL TALE signs are there – gone is the gardening paraphernalia from the supermarket shelves and in their place sit rows of games and toys and lurking round the next corner, cards, wrapping paper and tinsel.
You can hear the groans of disbelief, but yes, Christmas is imminent and if you do your own baking, now is the time to start.
Christmas cakes and puddings benefit from being allowed to mature and the earlier you make them the better they will taste when finally opened.
As well as the traditional Christmas cake recipe, I have included one for a white cake, which is ideal for those who like a fruity cake.
If the family don’t like marzipan and icing, the Texan Christmas cake is a good option. It is covered with cherries and nuts and glazed with apricot jam.
The Christmas cake, white Christmas cake and Christmas pudding all need to be started the day before baking as the fruit must be soaked overnight.
